By definition, a PM2.5 filter is a fine particle filter. The abbreviation PM2.5 stands for particulate matter 2.5, which is jargon for fine particles or droplets that are 2.5 microns or less in size. Such particles may reduce visibility and make air hazy.

Originally designed to filter the air in places where the air quality is not very good, PM 2.5 filters act as both mechanical and electrostatic barriers and protect the wearer against inhaling fine particles - when used in conjunction with a face mask, also function to block fine droplets from escaping the mouth and nose area and, therefore, help minimize the likelihood of wearers infecting others.
